OBJECTIVE: Design an annual publication for Cal Poly College of Science and Math titled, “Intersections”.
Showcased here is the Fall 2016 edition. The feature of this edition celebrates the dean’s retirement with a 4-page spread highlighting statements from students and a timeline of his history at Cal Poly.
Over the years, I have designed five editions of this magazine. Each year, the feature article and cover photo inform the color palette and various design elements. For this edition, the dean’s Cal-Poly-spirited tie led me to heavily feature the green and gold of the University’s primary color palette while weaving in secondary brand colors.
PROCESS: The editor of Intersections provided me with all the articles as text documents and corresponding folders with as many pertinent photographs as she had available. We then met to discuss her vision for the feature article and timeline element.
Next, I read all the content and highlighted portions to emphasis as pull-quotes. I then combed through the vast image library and selected engaging and relevant photos.
In the first design round, I presented the cover and a few select spreads to the client. Once the general design was approved I worked my way through the publication, engineering my design to fit a predetermined a table of contents and number of pages.
The full magazine then went through several rounds of content edits and approvals on the client’s end before it was finally printed.
OUTCOMES: This publication, as well as earlier and later editions, was sent out to students, faculty and alumni throughout the university. It helped the department with their donation requests and as a result of it’s success other departments of Cal Poly university came to us for design help for their publications.
